Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Best fictional TV Show Buffy

Created by Joss Whedon in 1997. Buffy the Vampire Slayer soon shot to critical acclaim as vital Saturday night TV. The first of our listing of the best fictional TV shows focuses on a teenage girl who is the slayer. A individual tasked with defending the world from the demons. Her subsequent move to Sunnydale on the Hellmouth and the complexities that occur as a result.

Why is it good?

  • Features interesting and varied episodes with a fascinating lore.
  • Plenty of episodes and variety of nasties.
  • Sarah Michelle Gellar in her prime.

Game of Thrones

Despite the frustration of fans because of the last two series’ poor execution. You still have 6 seasons of gold here. If it wasn’t for the most recent season it would probably be the best fictional TV shows of all time.

George R. R. Martin crafts an immersive world and initially diverse cast of characters. The storytelling is clever in the first six seasons, the world interesting.

Why is it good?

  • Set pieces grand enough to be in any blockbuster movie.
  • Characters so well written you can almost hate the actors in real life.
  • World building second to none and unexpected twists.
  • Not your typically good vs evil story

Fringe

It is almost worth naming this on the list of best fictional TV shows for the intro theme alone. The story follows Olivier Dunham as she embarks on solving science supernatural mysteries. With the help on the brilliant but troubled Peter Bishop and brilliant but mad Walter Bishop.

If you like your supernatural with a dose of Science to keep it relative, this is for you.

Why is it good?

  • Strong characters and relationships between them.
  • The theme tune.
  • Episodes have really amazing ideas and variation.
  • John Noble is quite superb in it.

Yu-GI-OH!

Yu-Gi-Oh!

I hate to say it Pokemon fans. Yu-Gu-Oh! really does have the trump card here when it comes to monster related anime series. The art style is more distinct in Yu-Gu-Oh! but also the stakes seem a lot higher.

Yu-Gi-Oh! follows little Yugi Moto and the mysterious spirit of the millennium puzzle as they battle with foes through the medium of the card game Duel Monsters.

Villains are well written and the mystery surrounding the spirit of the millennium puzzle will keep you hooked until the very end of the show. There were a few spin off series’ but none had quite the captivation of the original.

Why is it good?

  • Strong, well written villains.
  • Interest dueling system that will make you want to get the cards yourself.
  • Plenty of episodes.
  • Lovable main characters.
  • Duel Monsters is unbelievably cool.

BattleStar Galactica

If that intro does not get you hyped to watch the rest of the series I don’t know what will. Glen A Larson managed to create one of the best fictional TV shows in a Genre that had otherwise seemed cheap or tacky previously.

The show follows the destruction of the humans home planet by the Cylons and was first introduced as a mini series in 2003 showcasing the destruction. This was then followed by a full TV show in 2004 which was wildly successful.

Why is it good?

  • Fantastic performances by Tricia Helfer (number 6) and James Collins (Gaius Balter) as probably one of my favourite on screen duos of all time.
  • Not your typically humans win the battle story.
  • Script is really strong.
  • Probably the best realised Science Fiction series of all time.

Humans

best fictional TV shows - Humans

The best fictional TV shows don’t always need to be massively over the top. Sometimes they just need an interest concept executive really well. This is what Humans has in abundance with Channel 4. If you have not seen it, I can only describe it as being like Detroit: Become Human the game in UK TV format. There are no big actors here, performances are solid however even if some characters are a little limited.

Why is it good?

  • Nice, interesting concept and effective world built on a budget scale.
  • Characters are empathetic.
  • Tackles issues not usually party to the genre.

Supernatural

The best thing about Supernatural is its’ inability to take itself too seriously. In the video above are just one of the characters numerous funny moments. At one stage in the show the writers even ridicule one of the earlier episodes as being silly.

Beneath the humour though, there is a serious premise and a strong lore. Dean and Sam Winchester set off in search of the demon who killed their Mother and Sam’s girlfriend. What follows is one of the longest most successful supernatural best fictional TV shows of all time. All episodes are available on Prime TV

Why it is good?

  • Strong lore and wide variety of well researched demons.
  • Great relationship between the two main characters.
  • So many episodes to enjoy.
  • Does not take itself too serious but episodes are still high quality with serious undertones.

Black Mirror

It is almost hard to include Black Mirror in the best fictional TV shows anymore. Some of the concepts seem scarily possible now. There is always an unexpected twist in a Black Mirror episode. The amazing thing about a lot of these episodes is they are completely independent and often written by completely different people.

As a result do not fear if you do not enjoy the first episode. Every episode is so different that it is impossible not to find one you do not like.

Black Mirror challenges social norms and the influence of modern technology on our lifestyles. Watch on Netflix now!

Why is it good?

  • Every episode different with a different twist means you never know what to expect.
  • Wide variety of actors including some heavy hitters.
  • Prides itself on challenges social attitudes to technology.
  • Easy to empathise and imagine the scenarios happening.

A few honorable mentions include:

Attack on Titan

Pokemon

Stranger Things

Altered Carbon

The 100

Firefly

X-Files
